Istanbul University – Cerrahpasa, a state university, was established in 2018 by being splitted from the oldest and the biggest University of Turkey, Istanbul University. The Higher Education Council has given this decision due the fact that Istanbul University had 311.078 students, of whom 73.214 were regular and 237.864 distance education students. The two Universities established in 2018 were Istanbul University – Cerrahpasa (IUC) and Istanbul University (IU), that kept the original name. Now, Istanbul University – Cerrahpasa consists of 12 Faculties, 5 Post Graduate Institutes, 5 Vocational Schools, 2081 academic staff and educates some 39.337 students. Medical, Nursing, Education, Engineering, Health Sciences, Veterinary and Forestry are among the faculties that used to be part of Istanbul University and now are transferred to IUC.
The Hasan Ali Yucel Faculty of Education (HAYEF) which has now become part of IUC was established in 1999 and has been training pre-service teachers in 12 programmes ranging from pre-school teachers to social and natural sciences and to computer and instructional technologies and foreign language teachers. HAYEF alone hosts 3700 students each year and also another 2500
students in Certificate Programs. The university has high entrance standards and attracts candidates from the first 10% percentile of the national university entrance exam.
Istanbul University – Cerrahpasa holds the new Erasmus Charter for Higher Education 406932-EPP-1-2019-1-TR-EPPKA1-ECHE.
Academic staff included in this project are part of the Istanbul University – Cerrahpasa, Hasan Ali Yucel Faculty of Education “Learning Center” Researchers Team. The Learning Center works on 3D Virtual Learning Environments and the Implementation of 3D VLEs in Education, design and development of educational games in 3D VLEs for language learning, mathematical education, social sciences education, machine learning and how machine learning helps in educational research as well as big data analysis and learner analytics in education. The team have acquired masters degrees in constructivist approaches and educational technologies and PhDs in lifelong learning, plurilingualism, language strategies and evaluation via technology use. This team has taken part in numerous projects funded by the Istanbul University Scientific Research Center, including projects focusing on Course Management Systems and using 3D immersive environments. Hasan Ali Yücel Faculty of Education staff will be involved in this project and will implement a range of activities involving technical maintenance, research and development of pedagogy for teachers to work with young and adult learners in language learning field, field testing, dissemination and other related activities. The Faculty of Education’s main role will be to identify theoretical and pedagogical considerations for using games for learning foreign languages, as well as using them for
teacher training purposes and develop design principles for educational games.
The Faculty of Education’s expertise in 3D VLEs can provide an in-depth perspective to vocabulary training. The IUC has created games for language and content integrated learning within 3D VLEs and has successfully completed EU Erasmus Projects. The team can take over the role to identify theoretical and pedagogical considerations for using games for learning foreign languages, as well as using them for teacher training purposes and develop design principles for educational games.
